Building the future of autonomous underwater vehicles

Amador Valley High School Robotics Team - Pleasanton, California

We are AVBotz

AVBotz is the largest engineering team at Amador Valley High School; for the past 25 years we have continued to explore robotics and create opportunities for Amador students to explore real-world engineering, coding, and business skills.

We compete in RoboNation's RoboSub AUV competition and, since 1999, we've had the privilege to compete with the AUV teams from universities and organizations from around the world.

Through 2023-24, the team met regularly in various members' garages to continue work. We ramped up work with more meetings during the summer as we prepared our sub for the competition in early August.

Marlin V2

Building off of the experience gained from Marlin V1 & Nemo, we designed Marlin V2 as our new and improved autonomous underwater vehicle for RoboSub. With the continued support from our sponsors, we've been able to push the possibilities of what a High School AUV team can accomplish.

Our AUVs page provides an overview of Marlin V2's Mechanical, Electrical, and Software systems as well as our journal papers for the year.

AVBotz Subteams

Mechanical

Mechanical team members are responsible for designing and manufacturing the physical structure and auxiliary components of the submarine, all while working closely with business for keeping track of cost-effective designs. The subteam manages regular maintenance of the vehicle and conducts testing for new elements.

Software

Software team members are responsible for writing all code for the submarine; software manages control of the mechanical systems and implements algorithms for vision processing, digital signal processing, and mission control. Software members are critical for programming autonomous capability into the vehicle.

Electrical

The members of the electrical team act as the bridge between mechanical and software members. The electrical team pieces together all of the hardware required to software's main computer to keep our vehicles running and safe during operation.

Business

The business team takes care of AVBotz's financing and PR needs. Members scout and participate in fundraisers, connecting with sponsors, recruitment, outreach, and planning for the RoboSub competition. This division makes sure AVBotz has the resources and presence to continue the team's mission.

What We Do

RoboSub

RoboSub is an exciting underwater robotics program in which teams of high school and college students from around the world design and build an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). These vehicles are designed to autonomously navigate through a series of tasks. These tasks mimic ongoing research in Autonomous Underwater Systems. Team have the opportunities to meet, communicate, and collaborate with teams and organization from around the world.

International Competition

Every August, 30-40 teams from around the world participate in the RoboSub competition to show their mastery of engineering and mission design in autonomous underwater robotics.

RoboSub: Since 1999

AVBotz competes in the annual International RoboSub Competition which is hosted at various locations around the US. The competition is hosted by Robosub and co-sponsored by the RoboNation and their sponsors with the goal of advancing autonomous robotics technology.

Sponsors

Building autonomous underwater vehicles is no easy task, especially being one of the few continuously competing high school teams. We exist entirely on the support from our sponsors to accomplish our goals of learning about and applying AUV technologies.

Thank you to all our sponsors who support AVBotz!
